Stockbridge

Stockbridge is a pleasant and picturesque part of Edinburgh located in the north end the city near to New Town.

With fantastic architecture and a wonderful village feeling it is a part of town renowned for its desirability and has a number of good reasons to visit when you are here with us.

The main high street is called Raeburn place and has some of the best small independent retailers in Edinburgh including speciality food shops, bric-a-brac and some wonderful second-hand charity shops that are very popular with young and old alike. Add to that some really good small restaurants for a spot of lunch and you have the perfect day out.

Stockbridge also incorporates a group of eleven streets that together are known as The Colonies. Built many years ago to house workers these are now expensive and desirable houses, popular with residents and visitors alike.

If you get tired of rummaging around in shops you can always take some time for a bit of quiet contemplation at the nearby Royal Botanical Gardens, over 70 acres of fantastic landscaped gardens and a haven of tranquillity right in the heart of the city. The RBC is also a scientific research centre with a huge array of plants from around the world, many of which are housed in their vast glasshouses, which open daily from 10 a.m.

Sports fans might enjoy a quick trip to The Grange, one of the Edinburgh Academy Sports Grounds and site of the first ever international rugby match in 1871. Today the old ground is home to Scottish cricket and still hosts regular events throughout the year.

Finally you can stroll along to St. Bernard’s Well, a site of an old well house built around 1760 and once hugely popular with locals as a source of water renowned for its medicinal properties. You can find it on the north bank, by the Water of Leith (Edinburgh’s river), here in Stockbridge.
